Alice E Carufel

June 16, 1925 — September 14, 2012

Alice Elizabeth Carufel, of Lac Du Flambeau, Wisconsin, who completed 87 years of devoted service to her family, community, country and Tribe passed on Friday September 14, 2012, due to a long illness. Alice Elizabeth Carufel (nee- Redwing) born June 16, 1925, Flandreau, South Dakota to George and Sarah Redwing. Alice was the youngest of 4 children including brothers, James, John, and sister Elsie. As an enrolled full-blood member of the Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribe of South Dakota, she attended the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) Flandreau Indian School in Flandreau, South Dakota, graduating in 1944. Alice enlisted in the US Navy in 1945, completed training at the US Naval Hospital in Great Lakes, Illinois, attaining the rank of Pharmacist Mate-Third Class. Upon graduation, Alice was stationed in the US Naval Hospital, Bronx, New York, serving until her discharge in 1946. Upon discharge, Alice returned Chicago to seek employment, where she met David G. Carufel of Lac Du Flambeau, and they were later married on December 29, 1948. Dave and Alice remained married for 45 years until Dave’s passing on April 13, 1993. Alice and Dave were blessed with four children: Sally, Robin, Donald, and Charles. Alice was preceded in death by her parents, George and Sarah; brothers, James, John, sister, Elise and her husband, David of 45 years passed in April of 1993. Alice is survived by daughter, Sarah (Richard) Williams of Broomfield, Colorado; sons, Robin, Donald, and Charles of Lac Du Flambeau. Pall bearers included grandsons, David A. Carufel, Kenneth Carufel, Dakotah Carufel, Donald Carufel, nephews, Michael Anthony Carufel and William Kuckkahn. The Lac Du Flambeau Tribal Veterans provided honors for their fallen comrade.
