Obituary for David J. Condon

David J. Condon, 89, was surrounded by family when he died peacefully Jan. 7, after a short battle with throat cancer. He was predeceased by his mother Sue Haslam and father Tom Condon, who died when Dave was just 3 years old.
Dave practiced law in Green Bay for 41 years, retiring in 2001 to move permanently to northern Wisconsin. Even after retiring, he stayed active by doing a little case work, teaching law-related courses at Nicolet College’s Learning in Retirement program, and serving on Wisconsin’s District 16 board, which reviewed and made recommendations about lawyers’ ethical violations.
Dave held a bachelor of science degree in business administration from Northwestern University and his law degree from the University of Wisconsin at Madison. He was a member of the American Bar Association, Wisconsin and Illinois bar associations, Brown County Bar Association, American Trial Lawyers Association, Wisconsin Association of Trial Lawyers, Illinois Trial Lawyers Association, Defense Research Institute, the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Wisconsin, the U.S. Supreme Court and the U.S. Court of Military Appeals.
While serving in the U.S. Army’s 10th Infantry Mountain Division in the early 1950s, he practiced in the Judge Advocate General Corps, where he was the assistant staff judge advocate for the 10th and 3rd infantry divisions in Wurzburg, Germany. He was also trial counsel for generals court martial.
Shortly after returning to the United States in 1959, he worked briefly as a solo practitioner in Green Bay before joining a firm in Kenosha. The pull of family drew him back to Green Bay, where he worked at Cornelisen, Denissen, Kranzush, Kuehn & Condon until 1969, when he started his own firm. Dave was a very humble man except when he was fighting for clients inside or outside the courtroom. He generally did not practice family law, but on the occasions where he accepted cases, his goal was solely to make things better for his clients. Few people knew, for example, that when a couple sought his help to adopt a child, they never received a bill.
For many years Dave was very active at Union Congregational Church in Green Bay. He was a deacon, an usher, a member of the finance committee, and frequent participant in church programs and projects. He was also an adviser for the youth ministry, which had risen to more than 150 teen members by the time he left that role.
He was active in many civic organizations, including the Lac-Baie Girl Scout Council. His children delighted in teasing him about being the funniest Girl Scout they ever saw. He served as president of the Downtown Kiwanis Club, Brown County Legal Aid Society and Brown County Republican Men’s Club. He was also involved with the Brown County Republican Executive Committee, Green Bay Area Chamber of Commerce, Green Bay Estate Planning Council, Brown County Inter-faith Youth Council, YMCA enrollment and building fund drives. He was also the Brown County chairman of the Wisconsin Bar Foundation’s Project Inquiry.
Dave is survived by his wife of 33 years Joan Condon; his daughter Kerry Kester; his son and daughter-in-law David (D.J.) Condon and Catherine Ventura; grandsons Ryan McDonough, Nick McDonough, Louie Condon, Miles Condon; granddaughter Anya Ventura; five great-grandsons; and one great-granddaughter.
The family is grateful to the compassionate care Marshfield Cancer Center team provide to Dave and Joan during Dave’s last days. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Ministry Home Care Hospice, Ascension at Home, 1571 Highway 51 N., Suite C, Arbor Vitae, WI 54568.
