Douglas Martin Simonis Sr.

July 3, 1924 — October 17, 2014

Douglas M. Simonis, Sr. was born July 3, 1924 in the Township of Alban in Portage County to Martin and Veronica(Thorp) Simonis. He was one of 15 children and the last survivor. He grew up in Rosholt and Stevens Point.

He was a member of "The Greatest Generation". During WWII Doug served in the Army Air Corp. as a waist gunner on B-17s. He was member of 457th Bomb Group. After the D-Day invasion Doug volunteered three times to return to the beaches of Normandy to bring back the dead and wounded. For many years he was a member of the 457th Bomb Group Association.

On March 16, 1951 Doug married Lorraine H. Schultz of Stevens Point. They lived in Waukesha
for many years and raised 7 children. Doug worked for RTE Corporation as a Supervisor and a Field Service Tech. He was a longtime member of St. William's Catholic Church. He was an avid bowler. He spent many vacations and weekends with his family in Lake Tomahawk.

Doug enjoyed working with wood and built everything from book cases to a carport to complete houses. He built one house in Stevens Point and his current house in Lake Tomahawk. He also loved working in his yard and had a knack for growing beautiful flowers and plants of all kinds.

Doug loved spending time with his family. He so enjoyed living in the north woods and was a deer hunter for many years. Doug was very involved with American Legion Post 318 and served two terms as Commander and was also Legioneer of the Year. He was a most beloved husband, father and grandfather. He has left his family with a lifetime of wonderful memories and will be sorely missed.

Doug is survived by his wife Lorraine and children : Douglas, Jr.(Kathy) of Watertown,
Sharon(John) Fletcher of Debary, Fl., Debbi LaPrade, Robert and Steve of Lake Tomahawk, Karen Revels of Bonduel, and Tom of Rubicon. He is also survived by 18 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.

The family would also like to extend a special thanks to Season's of Life Hospice in Woodruff for all the tender loving care Doug was given in the last few months of his life.

In lieu of flowers memorials to The American Legion or Seasons of Life Hospice is suggested by the family.

Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, October 22 at Holy Family Church. Visitation will be held from 10:00AM till noon followed by Mass, a luncheon to follow the Mass and burial with Military Honors at 3:00 PM at Wilderness Rest Cemetery in Lake Tomahawk, WI
