Dr. Charles A. Schell

Dr. Charles Arthur Schell, a resident of Woodruff since 2003, died May 29, 2015.

He was born in 1924 in Quincy, Illinois, the son of Carl and Beatrice Schell. After graduating from Quincy High School, he served in the U.S. Army during World War II for 4 years, 2 of which were spent in the European Theater of Operations. He was a Combat Medic with the 103rd Infantry Division and was wounded in action in France on Thanksgiving Day 1944, receiving the Purple Heart and later the Bronze Star. After the war, he worked for the U.S. Military Government in Hof, Bavaria, Germany, where he met and married his wife Joan.

Upon their return to the United States, Dr. Schell graduated from Quincy University and in 1952 graduated from the University of Illinois Medical School. After interning at St. Francis Hospital in Evanston, Illinois, Dr. Schell practiced as a family physician in Des Plaines, Illinois, for 24 years. He was on the staff of Holy Family Hospital in Des Plaines where he was the first physician member of the Hospital Board.

In 1966, Dr. and Mrs. Schell built a vacation home on Island Lake on the Manitowish Chain, and in 1977 moved to a home on Blue Lake in Minocqua where they lived for 26 years until their move to Woodruff. Dr. Schell practiced at Lakeland Medical Associates and later at Marshfield Clinic, Lakeland Center. He was a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians since 1956 and was on the medical staff at Howard Young Medical Center from 1977 until his retirement in 1999. He served as President of the Medical Staff in 1986.

He was a Fourth Degree Knight of Columbus.

Survivors include his wife Joan, 2 daughters, Mrs. Barbara (Richard) Mayo of Delaware, Ohio, Mrs. Teresa (Ronald) Lewis of Oshkosh, Wisconsin, and a son, John (Lynda) of Rifle, Colorado, and six grandchildren, and one great grandchild. A son, Gregory Martin, preceded him in death in 1978. Dr. Schell is also survived by a brother, Mark A. (Leanne) Schell, of Quincy, Illinois, and a sister, Mrs. Martha Weibring, of Pekin, Illinois, plus many nieces and nephews.

A Funeral Mass will be said at St. Anne’s Catholic Church in Boulder Junction, WI on June 3, 2015 at 10:00 AM. Interment will be St. Anne’s Catholic Cemetery of the Pines in Boulder Junction.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, Howard Young Foundation, or Nature Conservancy of Wisconsin.
