Gilbert Bruno William Jung, 90, of Land O’Lakes, passed away on Dec. 11, 2021. He was born on Feb. 10, 1931 in West Allis, WI, to German immigrants William and Margaret Jung, the second of three children. At the age of 16, Gil moved with his parents and younger sister to Land O’ Lakes and with his father built Jung’s Modern Cabins on High Lake. He served in Korea with the U.S. Army from 1952-1954, and in 1962 married his wife, Lois.
Gil was a caring father and grandfather, a compelling teacher and storyteller, talented carpenter and woodcarver, and entertaining accordion player. He was a dedicated listener of the Saturday morning polka show on WXPR, a member of the American Legion Post 89 in Minocqua and participated in the Never Forgotten Honor Flight in 2013. Gil was named “Outstanding Citizen of the Year 1998” by the Boulder Junction Chamber of Commerce, was the vice president and later president of the Boulder Junction Chamber of Commerce for many years, and was involved in getting Boulder Junction trademarked as the Musky Capital of the World. He also served in the Vilas County Chamber of Commerce, served on the council of the Community Church of Boulder Junction (which he helped build) and served as an elder for the church.
Gil was one of the citizens involved with the first Musky Jamboree in Boulder Junction back in 1956, and continued to be involved for many years.
While Gil and Lois continued to live in Land O’ Lakes during the summer months and run the resort property as condos, they spent a number of winters in Apache Junction, Arizona.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Lois, daughter Ann (Pete Koester), sons Peter (Debra) and Paul (Kelly), and 10 grandchildren: John, Emily, Ross, Rachel, Gabriella, Madeline, Nicholas, Frances, Beatrice and Penelope. He is preceded in death by his parents, William and Margaret Jung, brother Eberhard and sister Eleanore.
Memorial Service for Gil will be held on Saturday, December 18th at 11:00 am at Community Church of Boulder Junction with a Memorial Gathering from 9:30 am till time of service.
