Harry C. Carroll, age 97 of Arbor Vitae, WI passed away on Friday, April 19th at Avanti Health and Rehab in Minocqua, WI. Harry was born on December 7, 1921 in Indianapolis, IN the son of Harry and Valla (nee Wycoff) Carroll.
Harry lived most of his life in Illinois and raised his family in Warrenville.
Harry served in the US Army during WWII in France and Germany. When he returned home, he went to the University of New Mexico and University of Illinois-Chicago, the pursued a career in architecture. He worked for some large Chicago architectural firms such as Shaw, Metz and Dolio where he helped design plans for some major Chicago buildings, among them Marina Towers and McCormack Place.
He branched out from there to work at Argonne National labs where they built the first nuclear reactors. From there he went to Fermi Lab in Batavia, IL, the home of the largest particle accelerator (atom smasher) in the world at the time.
After retiring from there, he moved to Arbor Vitae to pursue his passion for fishing and drawing. An accomplished artist who worked with scratchboard and colored pencil, he drew portraits of people and animals plus landscapes. He was also a model builder. He built models of some Chicago buildings, local businesses and snowmobile trail groomers. He was active in the Cross Country Cruisers Snowmobile Club for many years and designed and built map/donation boxes to look like groomers.
He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Dolores “Dee” and by three sons: Patrick, Michael and Timothy (Pam) all of Arbor Vitae, WI and by 8 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 sisters and daughter-in-law Shelley Carroll.
Visitation for Harry will be held on Saturday, May 4th starting at 4:00 pm till 5:00 pm at Nimsgern Funeral Home Chapel in Woodruff, WI with Funeral Services at 5:00 pm and burial will take place at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Arbor Vitae, WI.
