John H. Lohoff

April 9, 1963 — October 5, 2017

John Helmuth Lohoff, 54, died too early on October 5, 2017 after an incredibly short but brave battle with angiosarcoma cancer. He was born prematurely on April 9, 1963 to Helmuth and Lore Lohoff (nee Husmeier) in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. He attended Trinity Lutheran School and Farnsworth Junior High School where he enjoyed playing football, basketball, and baseball. In 1981, he graduated from Sheboygan South High School and later graduated with a bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin - Oshkosh.

John’s professional life was devoted to children and people with disabilities. He worked as a camp counselor for adults with disabilities, a social worker for children in a residential treatment center, as a case manager for Manitowoc County Hospital, and as a school counselor at Lac du Flambeau Public School. While working at the residential treatment center, he met a popcorn loving girl, Kristyn (nee Nigbor), who became his life-long soulmate on June 1, 1991 in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. He had four amazing daughters who were and always will be the center of his life: Alicia, Anna, Alena, and Kady. After earning his Master’s Degree from UW-Oshkosh, he moved to the Minocqua area and began working as a school counselor at Lac du Flambeau School, where he built relationships that stood the test of time with the students he worked with. They all held a special place in his heart.

John deeply loved his family and friends. He enjoyed travelling, camping, eating awesome food (especially sweets), photography, among many other things. He had the most amazing laugh that forced everyone around him to laugh as well. He was extremely proud of his German heritage. Being a first-generation American, he loved travelling back to Germany to visit his family there. Living his entire life surrounded by women, he loved to find times to enjoy “guy” things like attending sporting events, especially Brewer’s baseball and Ram’s football games. He made several memorable trips to St. Louis to watch Ram’s games with his nephew, Trevor. He found his hobby of woodturning, and built himself a shop where he created beautiful works to share with others through gifts and his Etsy shop.

John will forever be loved by his family, wife Kristyn; children Alicia Lohoff, Anna Lohoff, Alena Lohoff, and Kadrianna Lohoff; sisters Brigitte (Paul) Sorenson, Chris (Karl) Schwanke; brother-in-law Tom (Amy) Nigbor, many aunts and uncles, cousins, and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his father-in-law and his mother-in-law.

A memorial service to honor his life will be held at Nimsgern Funeral Home (1025 Margaret Street, Woodruff WI) on Friday October 13, 2017 from 4:00pm until 6:00pm. A brief service will follow. John’s family would like to thank their family and family of friends for all of the support that has been offered during his brief illness.
