Joseph J. Szot, age 74 of Winchester, WI died on Saturday, May 9th at his residence. Joe was born on February 15, 1946 in Chicago, IL the son of Joseph and Mary Szot. He graduated from Morton East High School and attended Morton Junior College before enlisting in the US Marine Corps and was wounded in action while serving in Vietnam.
He married Lynn Vrabec on December 6, 1969, she survives. Joe retired from Century Tel where he worked for 25 years and previously was employed by Illinois Bell and General Telephone. Joe was active with Veterans supporting the Manitowish Waters Fire Department, Manitowish Waters Snowmobile Club, Winchester Fire Department and both North Lakeland Grade School and Lakeland Union High School.
Joe loved spending time with his family, being outdoors enjoying the lakes and nature. He especially liked to tinker on projects in his garage, always into cars and trucks and was an avid reader of Steve Hamilton and William Kent Krueger books.
He is survived by his wife Lynn and son Jay Szot and daughter Kristine (Ben Reichert) Szot and by granddaughter Aubriana Szot his sunshine who always put an extra glimmer in his eyes and spring in his steps. Further survived by his brother Tom (Jan) Szot and sister in laws Denise (Grant) James and Regina (Tim) McKenna and by nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Preceded in death by his parents Joseph and Mary Szot and father and mother in law Richard and Vi Vrabec.
Private family services will be held at Nimsgern Funeral Home Chapel and family is planning a Celebration of Life with Military Honors on August 1st at the family home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to Wilderness Veterans Memorial or Northwoods Wildlife Center.
