Lewis A. Gore

October 24, 1934 — January 29, 2015

Lewis Albert “Lew” Gore of Manitowish Waters, WI entered into eternal life on Thursday, January 29, 2015 at Park Manor Nursing Home, Park Falls, WI with his family by his side.

Lew was born in Chicago in 1934 to Frances and Chester Gore, the 4th of 5 children, all who preceded him in death. He graduated from St. Rita High School in Chicago and began his adult life as an electrotyper. When the trade fell victim to technology, Lew transitioned to a sales and marketing career in Chicago and Dubuque, Iowa, as well as moonlighting as a popular and skilled bartender. He later became a restauranteur, owning the Copper Kettle restaurant in Dubuque before returning to Chicagoland in the mid 1970’s, where he worked in sales and was an active volunteer in the Knights of Columbus.

Lew and Darlene retired to Manitowish Waters in 2000 to pursue his love of fishing, snowmobiling and enjoying life in the Northwoods. It was there that he further developed his skills in arts and crafts, creating beautifully crafted and meticulously painted Christmas ornaments and figurines, many which found their way into the homes of Northern Wisconsin residents, tourists and shops.

Lew loved da Bears, Bulls, White Sox, boating, woodworking, arts and crafts, good music, shoestring potatoes, his many friends and his many dogs, but most of all he loved his family.

He is survived by his wife Darlene, daughter LuAnn (Mark) Smit of Manitowish Waters and son John of Denver, Colorado as well as many nieces and nephews who always looked forward to spending time with Uncle Lew.

His kindness and sense of humor will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

The family would like to thank the staff of Park Manor Nursing Home for the compassion, care and companionship they provided to him as his disease slowly took him from us and asks that you support Alzheimer’s research in whatever way you choose.

Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, February 11th at 11:00 AM at the Manitowish Waters Community Presbyterian Church.
