Mary Margaret Phillip

March 27, 1951 — September 12, 2013

Mary M. Phillip, 62, went home to be with the Lord, Thursday September 12, 2013 at the Seasons of Life Hospice House in Woodruff, WI. She had been battling cancer for three years. Mary graduated from the University of Wisconsin Stevens Point with a Bachelor of Science in English. She taught elementary through high school in Germany, Stevens Point and Rhinelander. Mary had a special talent for bonding with under-privileged students and became their strong advocate when she thought they needed any type of assistance. She loved to travel and took many classes to learn new things up to a month before her death. Her love of words almost exceeded her love of bright colors. She enjoyed reading, knitting, skiing, being outdoors and the Northwoods. Mary was active in Northwoods Knitters and Pearlers and Women’s Outdoor Group. Her church community was her strength in her last days. She is preceded in death by her parents Gerald and Jean Phillip of Stevens Point, WI. She is survived by four sisters: Kathy Phillip, Marshfield; Nancy (Jim) Jensen, Hazelhurst; Ann Phillip, Stevens Point; Jane (Ray) Pilguy, Arizona; and one brother Gerard Phillip, Arizona, three nephews and two nieces. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, September 24 at 11:00 a.m. at Pine Grove Community Church, 5840 Forest Lane, Rhinelander, WI, 715-369-5404. A private burial will be held in Stevens Point at a later date. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to one of the following: 1.) Rhinelander Area Retired Teachers’ Scholarship Fund. This scholarship is for Nicolet graduates going into teaching. Send to Cathy Steffen, 3841 N. Limberlost Rd., Rhinelander, 54501. 2.) Benevolence Fund of Pine Grove Community Church. 3.) Seasons of Life Hospice Home, 8951 Woodruff Rd., Woodruff WI, 54568. The family would like to thank the caring staff at Seasons of Life, Cathy Steffen, and numerous friends for all they did for Mary in these last days.
