Mavis Laura Vanselow

February 10, 1922 — September 4, 2016

Mavis L. Vanselow, 94, of Woodruff and formerly of Wauwatosa and Lakewood, passed away Sunday, September 4, while in hospice. Mavis was born February 10, 1922, at home in Fox Point, Wisconsin, to Edward and Lillian Van Acker and welcomed by her sister, Dorothy.

Mavis grew up in Milwaukee and attended Rufus King HIgh School. She worked for Benfeldt Ice Cream and later for Western Union as an operator. On May 4, 1946, she and Harold Vanselow, began their nearly 67-year marriage. They raised their only child, Patricia, in Wauwatosa.

Mavis began family life as a homemaker and Girl Scout Leader before returning to the workforce. She was employed for 20 years by the Wauwatosa School District from which she retired in 1984 as secretary of Washington Elementary School.

Mavis and Harold retired to Lakewood, WI. Being able to spend every day surrounded by woods and wildlife brought great joy to Mavis. She took delight in the birds that frequented her feeders. Mavis also enjoyed gardening, painting and golfing. She was a gracious hostess but a competitive card player.

Left to hold Mavis’ memory dear are her daughter and son-in-law Patricia and Richard Schwai of Park Falls; granddaughter, Jennifer (David) Cathcart of Hinesburg, VT; grandson, Jeffrey (Bernadette) Schwai of Walkersville, MD and great-grandchildren Kaylie Schwai, Lily, Evan and
Emma Cathcart.

The family wishes to thank the past and present staff of Milestone Senior Living Memory Care-Woodruff, for their patient and loving care in a sometimes difficult journey. The family also extends its appreciation to Dr. Kate Hospice Nurse Angie and the Oneida County Medic 5 Team for their compassionate care.

If desired, memorials may be made to the Northwoods Wildlife Center, 8683 Blumenstein Rd., Minocqua, WI 54548 or the charity of your choice.
