Norman J. Mesun, Sr.

We are saddened to announce the death of Norman J. Mesun Sr., 84, on Thursday, April 16, 2015 in Georgetown, SC after a short illness. Norman was born on October 20, 1930 in Chicago, IL, the son of the late Justin Mesun and Mary Baka. On January 22, 1977 he was united in marriage to Valerie L. Mesun at Saint Paul Lutheran Church in Tomahawk.

After spending his childhood in Tripoli, WI and graduating high school there in 1948, he enlisted in the US Army for 4 years spending over a year in the Korean War effort as a driver of the officers to the front lines to assess battle conditions. After his return in 1952 he raised a family of six children in Lake Tomahawk,WI where he was still residing with his wife, Valerie. He had a long career serving the State of Wisconsin in various positions in the DNR, beginning in the forestry division in the tree nursery, assisting in planting and harvest decisions; then assisting the building and management of many of the campgrounds and picnic areas in the Northern Highland/American Legion State Forest in the 1960’s, that thousands of people still enjoy to this day; then again to forestry and land management, ending his career as district land agent in land acquisition, helping in that regard even after his retirement in 1993. Some notable accomplishments include acquisition of the RR corridor from Wausau to Green Bay now used as a hiking/biking corridor, the shore lands of the Willow and Rainbow flowages, and many other properties now preserved for public recreational use for all. He was a long time member of the Lake Tomahawk American Legion Post 318. His current hobbies and interests did include many outdoor activities such as wildlife watching, golfing, bowling, biking, hiking and camping in the Boundary waters.

He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Valerie; his loving Children; son Norman (Kathy) Mesun Jr., daughter Leigh Marie (Robert) Ogiba; son Craig (Kim) Mesun; son Randy (Janeen) Mesun; son Keith Yonan and daughter Sandy Kwietnewski; also 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren, Sisters; Anita Mesun and Lucille Hill; as well as many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; Justin and Mary Mesun; 2 Brothers: Michael and Vanenty and a Grandchild, Sean and a Great-Grandchild, Logan.

A celebration of life well lived will be held Saturday, April 25, 2015 at 11:00 AM at Ascension Lutheran Church in Minocqua. Visitation will be from 10:00 AM until the time of the service. Reverend Dr. David E. Jensen will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials in Norman’s name be directed to the Never Forgotten Honor Flight.
