Susan Elizabeth Nejdlik

November 23, 1942 — June 17, 2020

Susan E. Nejdlik, 77, of Winchester, died on June 17, 2020 at home with her family under the care of Ascension at Home Hospice. She was born on November 23, 1942 to Olive Smith Ottoman and Army Major Louis Ottoman. She attended York High School in Elmhurst, Illinois and received a bachelor’s degree in education from Elmhurst college. She married James J. Nejdlik on December 18, 1965.
She enjoyed watching wildlife, adult coloring, politics, news, all kinds of music and spending time with her family. She enjoyed working and held down many jobs.
Susan loved spending time at her family’s homestead, Olivida, on Manitowish Lake in Manitowish Waters. After the death of her husband she moved to Manitowish Waters.
She is survived by her three children: Sarah Nejdlik (Zaretser) of Waunakee, WI., Amy (Lee) Stengele of Winchester, WI., and Thomas (Dawn) Nejdlik of Rhinelander. She is further survived by her 4 grandchildren: Mikaela and Sophie Zaretser and Charlie and Anthony Nejdlik.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband James and her brother Robert Ottoman.
She became involved with the UW Madison pulmonary/transplant department 22 years ago. She received a lung transplant 16 years ago. She enjoyed many years of good health and then eight years later, due to side effect of medications, needed a kidney transplant. She received a kidney transplant from a living donor, her son, Tom. She again had many years of good health until she began to suffer from dementia.
The family would like to express sincere gratitude for the excellent care and support she received from the UW hospital and clinics for the past 22 yrs. A heartfelt thank you to her lung transplant coordinator: Don Hawes, RN, for his excellent clinical skills, professionalism and sense of humor. Also, special thanks to lung transplant coordinators: Kelly Radford, RN and Kelly Goodrich, RN, David Haines, RN (Kidney coordinator) ,Mary Hayney pharmacist and pulmonologists Tiffany Mack, PA, Dr David Sonetti and Dr Keith Meyer.
Thank you to Ascension at Home hospice team members for the care and support so that Susan was able to pass away peacefully at home: Kristi RN, Alyson SW, Pam CNA and Jennifer chaplain.
Finally, Susan and her family would like to thank all living donors and deceased donor families for giving the gift of life. Thank you to that family that decided to donate 16 years ago on June 14, 2004.
Memorial donations can be made to Ascension at Home Hospice in Woodruff, WI. Also, the family urges you to consider becoming a potential organ donor. No formal funeral services are planned, a private family gathering will take place.
