Tom Charles, 63, passed away fittingly on Earth day April 22, 2019 at his home in Lac du Flambeau in the arms of his beloved wife.
Tom was born in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin to Frank and Frances Charles. There he attended St. Jude Catholic Grade School, Wauwatosa East High School, and went on to earn a business degree at UW Stevens Point. In May of 1979 he and his cousin Jim Burg purchased and operated the Ancient Mariner in Minocqua, WI until they sold it in 1989. He then worked as a rural mail carrier for the Minocqua Post Office until his retirement in 2017.
Tom is survived by his wife, Jane Mastaglio, his sisters, Mary Beth McKibbin, Catherine (Jim) McHugh, Barbara (Dan) Schauer, and one brother, Ken (Mona) Charles as well as a large loving extended family of in-laws, cousins, nieces, nephews, second cousins once removed, and great nieces and nephews. He leaves behind wonderful family and friends whose love and support has been boundless.
In his life Tom deeply appreciated nature and valued being out in it. He was always active, biking, hiking, swimming, canoeing, snowshoeing, skiing, watching wildlife, and maintaining his beautiful hiking trails. Tom's spirit will forever be present on his property and in the home he and his wife built together. He enjoyed writing and phenology, reading (especially history), playing sheepshead, Brewer games, traveling adventures, long phone conversations, being helpful to others in need, Point beer and Cheetos. He loved spending time with friends and family. He was well known for his playful sense of humor and making life fun for all who knew him. Tom has been a genuine and heartfelt friend to many and he truly valued all of those friendships.
A remembrance service for Tom will be held at Nimsgern Funeral Home in Woodruff, WI on May 18th. Gathering and greeting will begin at 2:00 pm with the service starting at 3:00 pm and a reception to follow.
