Bernard B. (Bernie) Zalewski, 80, of Lac du Flambeau, WI, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on May 20th at Aspirus Wausau Hospital. He was born July 18, 1940 in Stevens Point, WI, son of Benedict and Bernice (Skrzypkowski) Zalewski. Bernie is survived by his wife, the love of his life, Patricia A. Krush (“My Bride”), and would have celebrated 59 years with her on June 16th. He is survived by his four wonderful children, daughters Kim (Mike) Overholt, Karrie (Mike) Davin, Kris (Scott) Lacourse, and son, Kurt (Denise) Zalewski. He was Grandpa BZ to seven grandchildren: Ben, Megan (Kim), Kayla, Cody (Karrie), Cassie, Tyler (Kris), and Jake (Kurt). He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Mary Ann Rusin.
Bernie graduated from P.J. Jacobs High School, Stevens Point, WI in 1958. He had a career in the elevator industry beginning as a mechanic for Westinghouse Elevator Company before becoming a Wisconsin State Elevator Safety Specialist and retiring in 2000.
Bernie was a social man. He was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church Men’s Club, Knights of Columbus, and the choir. Any time help was needed, Bernie was your go-to guy. He never said no to anyone and had a sixth sense, offering to help before it was needed.
Over the years he and his bride took many trips making many great friends. Bernie loved to fish, hunt, cook, and cut wood. In retirement he enjoyed many hobbies including, watching NASCAR and cooking shows, wild ricing, pig roasting, and playing cards. He derived great satisfaction building equipment for his hobbies.
His greatest joy was spending time with his family. Casual gatherings, vacations, celebrations, birthdays, and holidays lead to great story telling, laughter, and joy.
Services will be held at St. Anthony Catholic Church, Lac du Flambeau, WI, on Saturday, May 29th. Visitation will begin at 9:00 a.m. with mass at 11:00 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to St. Anthony Catholic Church, 650 Old Abe Road, Lac du Flambeau, WI 54538.
