Blanche E. Smith, N10311 Tannery Rd., Tomahawk, passed away Monday, September 15, 2008 at St. Joseph Hospital in Marshfield. Blanche was born July 6, 1923 in Hardy, West Virginia, the daughter of Andrew and Elizabeth (Harris) McCormick. She was married to Frank Moravcik; he died May 31, 1968. She later married John "Cappie" Smith on November 22, 1969 in Tomahawk; he passed away September 7, 1996. Blanche was employed with the Naval Ordinance at a torpedo manufacturing plant for many years. She was also employed as a physical and respiratory aid with Sacred Heart Hospital. She was the activities director for the nursing home via the hospital, and also organized the gift shop and the candy stripers. Blanche served her country in the U.S. Army, serving from June 1944 through August 1946. She served as a member of the Auxiliary from 1970 until the time of her death, formerly serving as Treasurer, District Treasurer, Vice President, President, and District President. She was very active with the American Legion and received many awards, beginning with the Arlene Rintoul Memorial Award for Outstanding Service 1987 - 1988, and most recently received the Martha Marlow Historian Award in 1999. She was also very active in the Tomahawk community, serving on various committees, and received the CAROL Award for Outstanding Community Service in 1988, and the Partners on Health Award - Sacred Heart Foundation in 1990. She was also a member and past President of the Tomahawk Women's Civic Club. She was an active volunteer with the American Red Cross. Survivors include: 3 Brothers Dana McCormick Tomahawk Homer (Augustine) McCormick Ashland, Kentucky Clarence (Elizabeth) McCormick Kankakee, Illinois Blanche is further survived by many nieces and nephews, whom she thought of as grandchildren. Funeral Services for Blanche Smith will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, September 18, 2008 from Krueger & Sons Funeral Home. Fr. Edward Powell will officiate. The family will receive friends at the Funeral Home on Wednesday, September 17th from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. with a Veteran Service to begin at 7:00 p.m. Visitation will continue on Thursday from 10:00 a.m. until the hour of services at 11:00 a.m. Burial with Military Rites will be at Greenwood Cemetery in Tomahawk.
