Donald James Wilson

Donald James Wilson, age 88, a resident of Woodruff, WI, formerly of Phelps, WI, passed away Saturday, January 10, 2026, at Tomahawk Health Services in Tomahawk, WI. He was born October 20, 1937, in Phelps, WI, to parents Elmer and Ruth (Johnson) Wilson. 

Don proudly served his country for 20 years as a Chief Petty Officer in the U.S. Navy, including service during the Vietnam War. Following his military service, he dedicated many years to delivering mail to the residents of Phelps as a rural mail carrier and member of the Rural Carriers Association. Through rain, snow, and ice, Don faithfully completed his route, becoming a familiar and trusted presence in the community for 30 years. 

A man of honor and humility, Don never sought recognition for his many accomplishments. He was dedicated to his job, working diligently without fanfare. Don treasured his time outdoors, especially trout fishing with his Bro Tom and the many camping trips with their friend Dan. Don and Tom’s nephew Carl joined them in playing guitars and singing around the campfire. These simple pleasures and the companionship of those he loved brought him the greatest joy. 

Don was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Ruth Wilson, his sister, Nancy Peters, his sister-in-law, Carol Wilson, his son-in-law, Ken Buell, and his grandson, Peter “Peto” Buell. Don is survived by his loving wife, Jewel Jessen Wilson; children: Cate Wilson, Mary (Jay) Rideout, Stephen Wilson, Donna (Dick) Carlson; stepdaughter, Darcy (Torsten) Rahm; Gretchen Wilson; 11 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; brother, Tom Wilson; sister-in-law, Grace Jessen; as well as many nieces, nephews, and good friends.

A Celebration of Life will be held Monday, January 19, 2026, from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm at Nimsgern Funeral Home in Woodruff, WI.
