Obituary

In Loving Memory of One Remarkable Man

Emmet Francis Kirscht peacefully passed away on October 11 th at the home of his son, Stuart and daughter-in-law, Cristina, in Winter Park, Florida. He was 96 years old. Emmet was born and raised in Minnesota where he was a hard-working farmer and creamery worker, taking time to also proudly serve in the U.S. Army until his honorable discharge. He met and married his wife, Yvonne, in Minnesota where they had six children.

He moved his family to Minocqua in 1970. His success immediately began when he opened the Holiday Gas Station, where he built more than a place to fill up the tank or pick up everyday essentials. Through hard work, dedication, and his unmistakable personality, he turned it into a Minocqua staple. Emmet valued his customers, welcomed familiar faces, and became a fixture in the lives of the people around him. His life in Minocqua was not all work and no play, he enjoyed fishing the surrounding lakes and was a devoted member of the local American Legion Post 89 with whom he marched every Fourth of July down main street.

Emmet embraced an early retirement in Arizona during the second half of his life. He enjoyed his love for golf and the friendships that came with it. Golf was more than a game; it was an opportunity to spend time with friends, enjoy the outdoors, and keep cherishing life. His golf cart travels continued off the course by driving patients to their cars at the local hospital where he volunteered for many years. Emmet maintained his strong Catholic faith and always gave back to causes and organizations that were important to him when given the opportunity. The last ten years of his life were further enriched and blessed with the presence of his dear friend, Carol Ann Sliwinski, whom he met at church where they both served as ushers.

The smile and sparkle in his eyes that attracted his bride Yvonne never faded. Right until the very end, he held on with the same tenacity that had defined him throughout his 96 years. Emmet never stopped fighting, never stopped smiling, and never stopped loving life. Time and again, he found the strength to carry on, meeting each obstacle with determination and an extraordinary will to live.

Above all, Emmet’s greatest pride was his family. He will be dearly missed by his two sons, Steve, Stuart (Cristina); four daughters, Marge (Pat), Marit (Gordon), Deanna, Lisa; seven grandchildren, Mary (David), Grace (Michael), Logan (Meggie), Luke, Annie, Caroline, Nicki; four great-grandchildren, Cal, Jack, Caroline, Paul; as well as his brother, Ozzie (Gina).

He is preceded in death by his loving wife, Yvonne; his grandson, John Reuteman; his parents, Leo and Edith Kirscht; and his brother, Jim Kirscht.

Though he will be deeply missed, his sparkling eyes, unforgettable smile, and boundless love of life will remain in the hearts of all who knew him.

If you would like to honor Emmet with a gift, donations may be made in his memory to the American Legion Post 89, PO Box 678, Minocqua, WI 54548

A celebration of life will be scheduled at a later time.
