Francis O. von Schrader, 86, a longtime Tomahawk resident, passed away Thursday, December 21, 2023 at Aspirus Tomahawk Hospital surrounded by his family.
Fran was born April 5, 1937 in Eau Claire, Wisconsin to Freeman and Verna (Whelihan) von Schrader. He married Vera Bunkelman on May 5, 1962 also in Eau Claire, She passed away in 2008. In his younger years Fran worked at Channel 7 in Wausau as a sportscaster he later spent many years at Sieg and later Tomahawk Auto Parts. Following his retirement Fran worked for Scaffidi Truck Center as a driver. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church. Fran was an avid golfer and was a member of Maple Birch and later Edgewater Country Club. He enjoyed watching all Wisconsin sports on TV but especially loved watching his grandchildren compete, and he also enjoyed an occasional trip to a casino.
Surviving Fran are his children, Julie (Chris) Winger, Tomahawk; Mike von Schrader, Tomahawk; Joseph (Dawn) von Schrader, Rothschild; Mark von Schrader, Tomahawk; and John (Rebecca) von Schrader of Kewaunee. Fran is further survived by 16 grandchildren, many great grandchildren, and his dear friend and companion of many years, Betty Zehner and her family. Also surviving is a sister, Laura Barry, Pewaukee; a brother, Fritz von Schrader, Eau Claire.
Fran was preceded in death by his parents, and his wife, Vera and brother, Freeman.
A Memorial Mass for Fran von Schrader will be held on Saturday, December 30, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. from St. Mary Catholic Church. The family will receive friends at the church Saturday morning from 9:00 a.m. until the time of mass at 11:00 a.m. Krueger-Nimsgern Funeral Home is caring for the family.
