Hallie Murrel Fox, 99, of Phillips, Wisconsin, died peacefully on Tuesday, Sep. 19, 2023, at her home, surrounded by her family and friends.
Hallie was born June 1, 1924, in Independence, Louisiana, to Hardy and Theodora Stewart. Hallie moved to Chicago with her mother as a child and then moved to the Phillips, Wisconsin area at age 12 to live with her grandparents, Joseph and Marie Bruno, attending Deer Creek School in 7th grade. Hallie graduated from Phillips High School in 1942.
Hallie married Arthur Fox on July 24th, 1943, in Dennison, TX, where Art was in training as a WWII Fighter Pilot. One of Art’s best memories while he served as a combat fighter pilot in the Pacific and Europe during WWII and later in Korea, is of his precious Hallie. Despite not knowing where he was or being able to hear from him, and knowing the danger he was in, Hallie never wavered. While many fellow compatriots received “dear John letters”, he never did.
Hallie and Art celebrated their 80th wedding anniversary in July of 2023. They were each other’s “life-long song of love” in addition to loving Jesus, and were blessed with four children, Gregory, Melvin, Karen, and Tamara.
She spent a wondrous lifetime as a homemaker and what a homemaker she was! She was a devoted wife, mother, and friend! Hallie loved her husband, family and her friends, and delighted in the time spent with all. Dancing was one of Hallie’s absolute joys, which she did excellently with passion. Hallie and Art ballroom danced, square and round danced, and polka danced together their entire marriage. She loved cooking and was very talented at it. Hallie enjoyed traveling (especially with Art), sewing, decorating, reading, canning, preserving, and gardening. She was always up for an adventure and brought laughter and joy to whatever she was involved in.
Hallie was a beautiful lady, inside and out. Throughout a lifetime of joys, heartaches and losses, she had a deep and abiding faith in her Savior, Jesus Christ, that shone with beauty from within like a lighthouse to all, a light that can be attested to by all that knew and loved her.
Hallie is survived by her husband, Arthur Fox; daughter, Tamara (Robert) Brandt of Phillips, WI; daughter-in-law, Rungsri (Gregory) Fox of Menominee WI; grandson-in-law, Steve (Dawn) VanCamp of Rochester MN; granddaughter, Katrina (Darren) McGaffey of Byron MN; grandson, Jeffrey (Amber) Davidson of Mosinee WI; granddaughter, Rachel (Chris) Babcock of Mount Horeb WI, and granddaughter, Chotima Phan U Kam of Menominee WI; great-grandchildren, Megan McGaffey, Cassandra Davidson, Oliver Babcock, Jeremiah Davidson, Theodore Babcock, Joshua Davidson, Josiah Davidson; daughters-in-law, Diane Burger of Rochester MN, and Valerie Hess of Stevens Point WI; son-in-law, Sumner Davidson of Baraboo, WI; and many nieces and nephews.
Hallie was preceded in death by her parents, Hardy Stewart and Theodora Seward; children, Gregory, Melvin, and Karen Fox; granddaughter, Wendy (Fox) VanCamp; brother, Thomas Seward; and sister, Sherry (Mike) Breene.
