Helene A. Hoglund, 88, of Tomahawk, WI passed away Monday, January 1, 2024 at Riverview Health Services.  Helene was born October 19, 1935 in Tomahawk, the daughter of Thomas and Helene (Strassman) Nash.  Helene was united in marriage on January 15, 1954 to Wayne Hoglund and he preceded her in death in 1976. She then married David Dettmering in 1996 and he preceded her in death in 2019.

Helene was a lifelong resident of Tomahawk. She graduated from Tomahawk High School Class of 1953 as a straight A student, she then went on to graduate from Nicolet college in Liberal Arts in 1988.  Helene had many jobs, working for Tomahawk Telephone Company, Dave Hughs Drive-In, and Tomahawk Power & Pulp. Her 31 years of postal service started at the Tomahawk Post Office as a Mail Carrier, then Postmaster for Glen Flora and Tripoli.  She was a member of the Grace Lutheran Church serving as the Sunday School Teacher, pianist, church council, contribution campaign committee, and mentor for conferment’s, and Thrivent contact .  She was on the Town of Bradley Cemetery committee, she was the Vice President and director of the Knight Owls Snowmobile Club, she was the Den leader of the Brownies, Girl Scout and Cub Scouts, Secretary-Treasurer of the Kahle Park Board, Vice President of the Tomahawk Youth Center, and the Local Steard-National Association of Letter Carriers.  From the start of the Dog Park Helene was on the board of directors, she was head of board of directors for the senior center.  She started the Bus Service for senior citizens and Neighbors in Need at Grace Lutheran Church and was a member of the Tomahawk Garden Club.

Helene had a great sense of humor and said I had 88 years plus of Lifetime experience.  Her favorite sayings were, “Necessity is the mother of invention”, “When it rains look for rainbows, when it’s dark look for stars”, and Prayers are the world’s greatest wireless connections.

Surviving are her daughter, Ann (John) Kangas, Ocean Side, CA; sons, Thomas (Kathy) Hoglund, Chicago, IL; Timothy (Mary) Hoglund, Tomahawk; Matthew (Janet) Hoglund, Fall River, WI; 10 grandchildren, Eric, Chloé, Ken, Robin, Matt, Ben, Bailey, Ellie, Jason, Ian; eight great-grandchildren, Bodhi, Diego, Gabriel, Liam, Nathan, Ollie, Destiny, Norah; sister, Dawn Durbin, San Marcos, CA.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Wayne Hoglund and David Dettmering.

Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on January 12, 2024 at Grace Lutheran Church with Pastor Julie Sinkula officiating.  Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. to time of service at 11:00.

Donations may be made in Helene honor to the Girl Scouts or the Humane Society.
