James E. Nelson, 89, of Tomahawk, WI passed away Thursday, August 14, 2025 at the Riverview Health Service in Tomahawk. James was born April 25, 1936 in Tomahawk, the son of Emil and Thea (Odegaard) Nelson. He was united in marriage to Janis Haugen on August 26, 1961 in Washburn, WI.
James had a life-long passion for sports, particularly baseball, and was a member of the National Guard. He attended the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, where he met his wife, Janis. When he retired from a career in cost accounting with American Motors, he worked for Harley Davidson as a security guard. After raising his family in Brown Deer, he moved back to his hometown, Tomahawk, in 2002. He enjoyed all things Tomahawk, including hunting in the north woods with his family and friends. There was not a more dedicated Brewers, Packers, or Badgers fan. He will live forever in our memories for reading the newspaper while eating his morning Cheerios.
Surviving are his wife of 64 years, Janis; daughter, Cathy (Randy) Nelson-Dittmann, Texas; Steven (Amy) Nelson, Oconomowoc; three grandchildren, Justin and Alyssa Dittmann and Benjamin Nelson; three great-grandchildren, Lucas, Noah and Joshua.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Marie Welnak; and a grandson, David Lincoln Nelson.
Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, August 19, 2025 at Grace Lutheran Church with Pastor Julie Sinkula officiating. Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. to time of service at 11:00. Private burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery.
