John Allen Campbell

John A. Campbell, age 82 of Boulder Junction, WI, formerly of Janesville, WI passed away peacefully at Careview Rehabilitation in Minocqua on Thursday September 17, 2026 surrounded by his loving family.

John was born in Janesville, WI on August 30, 1944 to Chester A. and Helen A. (Lohry) Campbell where he grew up and attended Janesville High School. He met his future wife Nancy L. Driscoll while in high school and they were married on February 24, 1964, in Dubuque, IA. Nancy passed away in 2005 in Janesville, WI.

Joining Iron Workers Union 498 in August 1965, iron working became John’s passion and his life long career, erecting some of the largest metal building structures across the Midwest. He would often tell of the Big Jobs he had worked on that were so big that the shadow alone from the crane weighed over six tons and covered over 3 three states.

Selfless and independent, he regularly shared his “Johnny Jokes” with all who were fortunate to cross his path. John’s enthusiasm to share his knowledge as a mentor to new apprentices ensured they quickly became skilled members of the iron working trade. Whenever his crew was under pressure, he lifted iron as well as the spirit of all around him. He was especially grateful for the support from JP Cullens’ Steel Division from where he retired in 2022.

Especially important to John was his extended family of Local 498 Iron Workers and friends across the Midwest. Since its’ inception over forty years ago, John was the Master of Ceremonies at the annual National Iron Workers’ Festival in Mackinaw City, MI where he was known as ‘2-Ply’ and was inducted into the Iron Workers’ Hall of Fame in August 2017.

Believing he was put on earth so his faithful companions Harley, Tyler and Bridget wouldn’t have to walk alone, they made daily trips to their favorite lake for a quick run and swim.

Upon moving to Boulder Junction, WI, he married Phyllis M. Carroll on June 2, 2007 and together they shared his hobby of motorcycling and the pleasures of northern Wisconsin.

John will always be remembered as a fearless free spirit, living each day as a new adventure. He had a gift and ability to make friends with everyone he met. His caring and strong soul will be deeply missed, especially by his granddaughter Jaeanna who visited her “Papa” daily and was the grateful recipient of his endless humor.

John is survived by his wife Phyllis M. Campbell, daughters; Dawn M. Kost, Julie A. Sullivan, Nicole M. (Jay) Kassien and Leighanne M. Robinson; siblings; Judy (Monty) Pearson, Chris (Christina) Campbell and Brad (Janet) Campbell, 6 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren and many nieces, and nephews.

John was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Nancy, daughter Diana L. Campbell and sister Barbara J. Baker, brother-in-law Richard M. Baker and grandson Ryan J. Prescott.

Funeral arrangements are pending and a celebration of life will be held at a future date. Interment will be at Oak Hill Cemetery, Janesville.
