John Voermans, age 82, of Tomahawk passed away on May 12, 2026 at Aspirus Wausau Hospital leaving behind a lifetime of memories that will be cherished by all who knew him. John was born September 4, 1943 in Tomahawk to the late Peter and Beatrice (Schuit) Voermans. John was raised on a farm in Harrison where he learned the values of hard work and pride of working the land. After school John worked at a foundry in Milwaukee welding and then worked for Caterpillar using his natural talents for welding and fabricating. He also attended a technical school while working in Milwaukee where he learned machinist skills. After a few years in Milwaukee he came home and worked for a time with Charlie Renn doing masonry and steel building construction. He also worked for a construction company moving houses for a short time. John was called to service for his country in January 1968 through a draft for the Vietnam war. He was stationed in Germany and was a mechanic mostly working on generators. It was through this service that he was able to see many parts of Europe, gain some lifelong friendships and many memories he carried with him forever. He was honorably discharged in 1970 after a tornado destroyed his families’ farm. He began working at the Tomahawk Paper mill in the woodlands division where he was able to utilize his talents and skills as a mechanic and fabricator working on earthmoving and logging equipment. John met his love Beverley Luse prior to his military service in 1967 and the two were united in marriage on February 13, 1971 after he returned home from the military. John was known for his magnificent talents especially when it came to fabricating and equipment repair. John was a very skilled welder building many pieces of equipment for the paper mill to aid in logging and processing wood at the mill. Those pieces of equipment were used at the facility well past his retirement in 2005. John was locally considered the most dependable “fix-it” man being able to repair almost anything from a non-starting engine to a broken casting on a backhoe. Local farmers and loggers called him at anytime to try and get his services. John loved to camp and fish with his family. He was always busy cutting firewood or working in his fields bailing hay.
Survivors include his wife Beverley, his sisters Patricia Voermans and Kathleen Maderer, his sons John (Maria), Grant, Matthew (Stacey) and Andrew (Beth). He is further survived by his 10 grandchildren Ashton, Carly, Samantha, Mallory, Ana, Alicia, Avery, Drew, Adeline, and Eloise along with his great granddaughter Kayla Mae.
A private service will be held to honor John’s life.
