Richard "Dick" Giers, age 83, passed away on Friday, October 24, 2025, at home, with his family by his side, ending a 12-year battle with cancer. Dick was born in Chicago, IL on March 10, 1942, to the late Norbert Giers and Ruth (Woehrle) Peters.
Dick spent the early part of his life in Chicago and eventually migrated to Tomahawk when his parents purchased the Somo View Resort. He loved spending the summers working around the resort and spending much of his time with his beloved Grandparents. Dick attended Tripoli High School and graduated in 1959. After graduation Dick enlisted in the US Air Force, becoming an Air Traffic Controller, a job he truly enjoyed. A free weekend in 1965 led him to Tomahawk where he would meet the love of his life, Janet, his true soulmate. After 6 short months, they said, "I do" and built a love story lasting 60 years. Dicks greatest love in life was his wife and family, especially his Mother-in-law Verna with whom he had a special connection. He always made sure to make everyday moments special, in every way.
Dick continued his life in the Air Force for 28 years, earning numerous medals and commendations. He travelled the world many times, making lifelong friends. His favorite assignment was in Alaska, where his passion for the outdoors expanded. He took every opportunity to hunt and fish with his buddies and his son, often going on week-long excursions in the Alaskan Wilderness.
After retirement Dick came back home to Tomahawk. He found his second calling at Lincoln Hills School as a counselor and Supervisor. He retired after 17 years.
Dick had a flare for life like no other and was rarely seen without a smile. He never met a stranger and enjoyed talking with people from all walks of life. He was quick laughed, slow to anger and forever an optimist. He was generous to his core and never held a grudge. He was passionate about his hobbies including woodworking (especially furniture building), flower gardening, cooking, baking and candy making (he was known for the best peanut brittle) and golfing, where he could easily be spotted in his traditional golf knickers. He had a lifelong love for music. He played multiple instruments but especially loved the guitar and singing. He had such a beautiful voice and would often be the loudest one in the choir. Dick loved to just jump in the car and go for overnight and day trips around the state enjoying the beauty of Wisconsin and the UP of Michigan. A favorite spot was by Lake Superior, or anywhere he was with his wife and family. He lived life to fullest, every single day.
Dick is survived by his loving wife, Janet Giers, and children: Laurie Wonderling, Richard Giers Jr. and Julie Giers Pepple and further survived by 5 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.
Dick was preceded in death by his parents, Norbert Giers and Ruth (Woehrle) Peters, Mother-in-law, Verna Rigney, Father-in-law, Elmer Rigney and two grandsons, Matthew Russell Pepple and Ryan Matthew Pepple.
At Dicks request, no formal services will be held. A celebration of life will be held at a later time.
