Roswell P. "Buck" Nelson, age 85, of Tomahawk, passed away on Monday, August 13, 2007 at St. Joseph's Hospital in Marshfield. He was born June 22, 1922 in Lignite, North Dakota to the late Louis and Laura Nelson. He graduated from Tomahawk High School in 1941. He served in the United States Army and Merchant Marines during World War II. Buck was married to Harriet von Gnechten on August 5, 1942 in Tomahawk; she passed away on March 11, 1984. He was married to Therese Krofta on June 27, 1995 in Racine, WI; she survives. Buck was the Founder of Nelson's Super Market and Nelson's County Market in Tomahawk. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Tomahawk; where he served as a Eucharistic Minister. He was former President of the Tomahawk City Council; having served for 30 years. He was former President of the Tomahawk Jaycees. He was a member of the American Legion; having received a certificate for 60 years of membership. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus. Buck had received the honor of being named Grocer of the Year by the Wisconsin Grocer Association. He had been previously named Boss of the year in Tomahawk, and was a past recipient of the Distinguished Service Award. He was a longtime troop committee member of Troop 548 in Tomahawk. He was a Co-founder of the AA Local Chapter in Tomahawk. He was a major contributor to the SARA Park Activity Center. Buck was the 2002 recipient to be entered into Hatchet Athletic Hall of Fame; where he was recognized for his accomplishments in the boxing program at Tomahawk High School. Survivors include his Wife, Therese Nelson of Tomahawk, 2 Daughters, Mary (Jerry) Kahn of Fayetteville, Georgia, and Dr. Laura (Jim LaFond) Nelson of Minocqua, WI, 3 Sons, Ross (Mary) Nelson, Donald (Jackie) Nelson, and Paul (Kelly) Nelson, all of Tomahawk, a Daughter-in-law, Judith Nelson of Tomahawk, 6 Step-Children, Donna (John) Spiglanin of Racine, Dean (Kathy) Krofta of Lake Tomahawk, Denise Erickson, Dale Krofta, Dave Krofta, all of Racine, and Dan Krofta of Denver, CO. Buck is also survived by 2 Sisters, Joy (Lloyd) Bly of Lignite, ND, and Shirley Kewan of West Allis, WI. He is further survived by 17 Grandchildren, 14 Great Grandchildren, and 5 Step Grandchildren. Buck was preceded in death by his Parents, his Wife Harriet Nelson, his Son, Bob Nelson, and a Brother, Adolph Nelson. Mass of Christian Burial for Roswell "Buck" Nelson will be held Thursday, August 16, 2007 at 1 PM from St. Mary's Catholic Church in Tomahawk. The family will receive friends at the Corpus Christi Center of St. Mary's Church on Thursday from 9 AM until the hour of mass in the church at 1 PM. Rev. John Anderson will officiate with Interment to take place at the Calvary Cemetery in Tomahawk. In accordance with Buck's wishes; his family asks that in Lieu of Flowers, that memorials be given to St. Mary's School in Tomahawk, Sara Park Ice Arena, the Tomahawk Food Pantry, or the charity of your choice.
