Sophie Bruzan

Jul 13, 1935 — Aug 20, 2026

Camden, NC

Sophie Ann Bruzan, age 91, of Camden, NC, formerly of Tomahawk, WI, passed away peacefully at her residence on August 20, 2026. She was born in Chicago, IL, July 13, 1935, to the late Stanley Worobice and Anna Vilchuck Worobice, and was the widow of Gerald “Jerry” J. Bruzan.  After Sophie and her husband married, they lived in Chicago, where Sophie used her Sears stock for a down payment on their first house. Jerry later credited her for this smart decision, and she remained forever proud of her action. The family later transitioned to Tomahawk, WI in 1972, where they owned the Boomba Bar for 10 years.  Her career as a waitress spanned many years and left an indelible mark on those she served and worked with. She began her journey at Rex Restaurant, worked at the Island Café and Junction Restaurant, and finished her career at the Tomahawk Family Restaurant, from where she retired twice.  Sophie had a natural talent for making people feel welcomed and cherished, always engaging with patrons through her funny and entertaining personality. Her infectious laughter, smile, and genuine warmth made every dining experience memorable, and she brought joy to countless patrons and colleagues. Beyond her professional life, Sophie found delight in life's simple pleasures. She was known for her tasty bakery. She had a passion for going to the casino, where the thrill of chance matched her vibrant spirit. Listening to and dancing the Polka was another of her joys, a testament to her lively nature and love of music. She enjoyed many close friendships through the pool league. Sophie approached life with a positive attitude, embracing each day with enthusiasm and a smile. Most of all Sophie loved to give to others.

She is survived by a daughter, Debbie Ward (Kevin) of VA; a son, Michael Bruzan (Joelle) of Camden, NC; a sister, Dolores Worobice of Countryside, IL; and four grandchildren, Josh Bruzan, John Bruzan, Devin Ertel (Matt) and Melanie Garren. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Marion Schmalz.

The family gratefully acknowledges her dear friend Bette for helping Sophie extensively prior to her move to North Carolina to be near her family in addition to all the other amazing caregivers who cared for her so lovingly.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital (https://www.stjude.org/), or to Catholic Charities USA (https://www.donate.catholiccharitiesusa.org),

A celebration of life event will be held starting at Noon on Saturday, October 3, 2026, at the Town of Nokomis Town Hall, 2451 Lake Nokomis Road, Tomahawk, WI 54487.  Private burial will take place at Prairie Rapids Cemetery.
