Sue was born on May 28, 1943, in Milwaukee, the daughter of Henry and Doris Hauboldt. She graduated from Bay View High School in 1961, then went to UW-Madison to study art. She received a bachelor’s degree in art education, and later went on to receive her master’s degree. During her undergraduate years, she met Jack Klein, and they married January 28, 1967. Sue worked as an elementary school art teacher for 32 years for Madison Metropolitan School District, teaching many years at Huegel Elementary School. After leaving the elementary school, she taught at UW-Madison, retiring from teaching in 2010. Never one to sit still, she then learned about beekeeping and started MisBEEhavin Apiary with Jack. They sold honey and beeswax products at various farmers’ markets.
In 2013, Sue and Jack moved to Natural Lakes Homeowners Association, situated between Boulder Junction and Presque Isle, where they built Sue’s dream home and found an unparalleled community of friends.
Sue is survived by her husband Jack and two sons, Jason (Jeanne Kolker) Klein of Madison, and Travis (Leeann) Klein of Manitowoc; one grandson, Ian Klein of Manitowoc; a brother, Gary (Jane) Hauboldt of Mosinee; nephew Brady (Jennifer) Hauboldt of Springboro, Ohio, niece Stacy (Jim) Louis of Jenison, Mich., and nephew Josh Hauboldt of Red Lodge, Mont.; one great-niece, Zoe Louis, and four great-nephews, Ben Louis, Trey Louis, Jackson Hauboldt and Max Hauboldt; and one aunt, Ruth Hauboldt of Two Rivers. Sue was preceded in death by her parents and Jack’s parents.
Sue engaged in many hobbies, including swimming, kayaking, traveling, taking nature photographs to use in her paintings, baking, reading and playing cards with family and friends. Sue served on the Board of Directors for the Lakeland Art League and exhibited her art at local spaces. She continued to produce art abundantly in her retirement, including ceramics, drawings and paintings in acrylic and watercolor. She had lately been exhibiting works that mix drawing and watercolor that display her love of the local wildlife with beauty and humor.
A memorial fund has been established in Sue’s memory. Please send cards to Nimsgern Funeral Home, P.O. Box 230, Woodruff, WI 54568. In lieu of a funeral service, Sue’s family plans a celebration of life in the summer of 2024 in her favorite place, Natural Lakes.
